Migraine Relief with Ice Remedy

When you have a migraine headache - or a loved one has - you want a migraine remedy. You visited your physician before, and you know his advice was to take over-the-counter pain medication and rest in a dark room, but that isn't enough. You want to get relief sooner.

One of your friends suggests getting migraine relief with ice, and you want to know more. What is a migraine remedy that uses ice?

Cryotherapy - the Ice Remedy

At the Department of Neurology, University of Illinois at Chicago, Lawrence D. Robbins, M.D. decided to study whether or not cryotherapy (treatment with ice) was effective as a migraine remedy. Dr. Robbins enlisted 45 migraineurs in his study and, when they experienced an episode, gave them only a cold head wrap as a migraine remedy. Here are some of Dr. Robbins' findings.
* 35.5 percent of the 45 patients said that, as a migraine remedy, the ice was not at all effective.
* 29 percent of them said the ice remedy was a little bit effective for migraine relief.
* Cryotherapy was fairly effective for 26.5 percent of those participating.
* Only 9 percent said the cold head wrap was completely effective as a migraine remedy.
Robbins, Lawrence D., M.D (1989), Cryotherapy for Headache, Headache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain 29 (9), 598-600.
If you were among the 35.5 percent who said the ice treatment was useless as a migraine remedy, you might never try it again. Nevertheless, as a result of his cryotherapy study, Dr. Robbins says: "You have a 50-50 chance of getting some pain relief within three minutes of applying a soft, cold ice pack wrapped in a towel to your head."

Reasoning Behind the Ice Remedy

It is clear that the ice migraine remedy works for many people. It is clear, too, that it works to a degree most of the time. Perhaps a better understanding of how it works will help others test cryotherapy.
During a migraine episode, the blood vessels in the head tend to dilate - open more widely. They may become swollen with blood, causing pressure on the nerves surrounding them. The nerves begin to send pain signals, and you sense a migraine.

To get migraine relief with ice, you surround the head with a cold wrap, gradually cooling the blood vessels. As they cool, they become constricted, and return to normal size. This can lessen blood flow to the head, and reduce pressure on the nerves, providing a migraine remedy.

Migraine Ice
A relatively new product to hit the market, "Migraine Ice" headache pads are advertised as giving "instant cooling, soothing relief" that lasts, sometimes up to 4 hours. The pads are convenient, and require no refrigeration. Those who have frequent migraines can keep the pads in a desk or locker at work for a ready migraine remedy. To use, you simply remove the pad from its pouch, peel off a protective film, and apply the pad to the back of your neck.

Soft Ice

Another convenient product that claims to provide migraine relief with ice is Soft Ice. This is available as either a neck wrap or a head wrap. Since this product delivers comfortable cold therapy that chills the head or neck, it may be just what you need as a migraine remedy.

Migraine Symptoms - Can A Migraine Be "Healing"?

The migraine symptoms you are experiencing may be a 'healing response' by your body to an imbalance in your nervous system.

Migraine Symptoms
If you get migraines, you know your symptoms intimately. You could describe them in your sleep.

They typically include:
Throbbing pain, usually on one side of your head. A pale face and cold hands and feet. Sensitivity to light and sound. Blurred vision. Dizziness and numbness. Difficulty in concentrating or speaking. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Stuffed nose. Stiff neck. Tender scalp. Intense fatigue. Nervousness. Anxiety.

Imbalance In Your Nervous System
What do these symptoms have in common? They are all indicative of an overactive sympathetic nervous system. This system elicits the "fight or flight" response you experience during periods of stress. Migraine headaches seem to be connected to the activity of your sympathetic nervous system. In fact, sustained periods of stress can lead to migraines.

How Can Anyone Think Of A Migraine As 'Healing?'
Some researchers think that a migraine is literally a healing phenomenon. They think it helps to 'flip the switch' in your body back toward parasympathetic nervous system activity. The parasympathetic system prepares the body for rest and helps the digestion process, so our bodies can efficiently take in nutrients from the food we eat.

What Does This Tell You?
By preventing (or decreasing) over stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, migraines can be avoided. The best way to do this is to consciously stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system: 1. breathe calmly 2. relax your major muscle groups.

The Key Word is 'Prevention'
Once a migraine has begun, the chain of reactions is already set in motion. The migraine has momentum, like a freight train. It is harder to stop a migraine than to prevent one starting in the first place.

Sandra Feder is a writer (fiction and nonfiction) and a former research chemist. I'm interested in migraine symptoms, migraine treatment, migraine help, migraine prevention, migraine relief, because I had migraines for many years. I developed a system that helped my body to stop making migraines and I wrote a book about it. I found that there were five areas of imbalance that contributed to my migraines. Migraine Remedies - The Caffeine Paradox

Caffeine has a paradoxical relationship to migraine headaches. While it can be found in conjunction with such common over-the-counter painkillers as acetaminophen and aspirin, it is also implicated as a migraine trigger. Many migraineurs, myself included, have found that caffeine alone can significantly reduce the pain of a migraine headache, especially when consumed prior to the onset of the headache. Yet caffeine, which is seen as one of the more potent migraine remedies, is reported to have a long-term effect as a trigger. In fact, as you'll find out in this article, caffeine may even be one of the foremost migraine causes. This paradoxical relationship between the world's favorite stimulant and your cranial woes deserves, in my view, special attention.

When taken in doses which are likely to be consumed by human beings (e.g. somewhere between a cup of coffee and three pots), caffeine's one and only known effect on the human body is to block adenosine receptors, preventing the adenosine from attaching to these receptors. Adenosine, a robust neurotransmitter, happens to have a great number of functions; however, one of its primary function is to regulate the production of other neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine and acetylcholine. In case you haven't heard, these neurotransmitters happen to be your body's primary means of handling and eliminating the sensation of pain. Even more notable is the fact that adenosine alone is know to kill pain in certain areas, such as the brain stem, and cause pain in other areas, such as the skin and eyes.

The prevailing folk wisdom is that migraines are caused by either dilation of blood vessels or oscillation of blood vessels. However, it is important to note that this dilation and oscillation is, itself, caused by something else. Incidentally, adenosine's effect on the blood vessels is dilatory; whereas, caffeine's effect on the blood vessels is contractive. So even if we follow folk wisdom, there is already a distinct relationship between caffeine, adenosine, and your migraine headaches: if migraines are associated with blood vessel dilation, and adenosine dilates blood vessels, then it stands to reason that adenosine somehow contributes to the pain associated with migraines. It also stands to reason that caffeine, which counteracts adenosine and contracts blood vessels, would help alleviate this pain.

Interestingly enough, migraine headaches have been determined to be associated with increased levels of adenosine in both the head and the neck area. Because caffeine is known to be an effective migraine headache treatment, and because caffeine's only known chemical effect is to block adenosine receptors, one would naturally be led to believe that somehow these increased levels of adenosine during a migraine have a central role in the sensation of pain. So, while adenosine seems to be a painkiller in some parts of the body, where migraineurs are concerned, it is apparently a pain-causer. Thus, the blocking effect of caffeine becomes a fairly obvious means of reducing the pain that so famously accompanies migraine headaches.

So far so good, right? If you get a headache, just drink some coffee and watch the headache dissolve. Case closed, next please!

Not so fast, buddy.

Unfortunately, because caffeine is a neurotoxin, your body will naturally attempt to adapt to its presence. So although the action of caffeine is to block the reception of adenosine, your body will compensate by becoming more sensitive to adenosine. In other words, you will develop more adenosine receptors and these receptors will become more sensitive. This leads to the famous adverse reaction to using caffeine as a long-term migraine headache treatment. Your body begins to expect the regular dose of caffeine and, if it doesn't get it, will find itself flooded with the adenosine that it expects to be blocked by the caffeine. So our potential cure can apparently make the problem much worse by transforming itself from one of your migraine remedies into one of your migraine causes.

This double-edged sword aspect of caffeine suggests that a migraineur would be best served by taking an approach of moderation: caffeine can help relieve pain, but taken in excess it contributes more pain than it alleviates. However, even taking caffeine in moderation leads to an undesirable neural adaptation: increased sensitivity to adenosine, decreased sensitivity to dopamine, serotonin and other neurotransmitters whose action is similar to caffeine and contrary to adenosine. It turns out that a single cup of coffee a day (100mg) will trigger your body's adaptive response to caffeine: more pain-causing neurotransmitters and fewer painkilling neurotransmitters. Furthermore, long-term and/or heavy caffeine users who quit caffeine report an extreme sensitivity to caffeine as a migraine trigger. In other words, for some people, the threshold for your body's adaptation (read: addiction) to caffeine can be much lower than 100mg per day.

So what's the ultimate cost of being both a migraineur and a caffeine user? Well, studies are inconclusive. Because all studies of the effects of caffeine on headaches have not actually tested their control groups for the presence of caffeine in their diets and because these studies have relied on the test subjects to report their own diets, it is highly likely that in our caffeine steeped society, the control group didn't control very much.

Nevertheless, the chemistry is clear: high levels of adenosine are present during migraine headaches; adenosine causes blood vessel dilation, which is a condition directly associated with migraine headaches and was once thought to cause them; caffeine encourages greater production of and receptivity toward adenosine. there is no question that caffeine produces conditions in the body which are highly conducive of migraine headaches. So if you want to do everything in your power to quash the migraines, it would be prudent to cut the drug out of your diet entirely. But do it slowly! Everyone knows that caffeine withdrawal feels exactly like migraines.

A Brain Wider Than the Sky: A Migraine Diary

With more than one in ten Americans -- and more than one in five families -- affected, the phenomenon of migraine is widely prevalent and often ignored or misdiagnosed. By his mid-forties, Andrew Levy's migraines were occasional reminders of a persistent illness that he'd wrestled with half his life, though he had not fully contemplated their physical and psychological influence on the individual, family, and society at large. Then in 2006 Levy was struck almost daily by a series of debilitating migraines that kept him essentially bedridden for months, imprisoned by pain and nausea that retreated only briefly in gentler afternoon light.

When possible, Levy kept careful track of what triggered an onset -- the "thin, taut" pain from drinking a bourbon, the stabbing pulse brought on by a few too many M&M's -- and in luminous prose recounts his struggle to live with migraines, his meticulous attempts at calibrating his lifestyle to combat and avoid them, and most tellingly, the personal relationship a migraineur develops -- an almost Stockholm syndrome-like attachment -- with the indescribable pain, delirium, and hallucinations.

Levy read about personalities and artists throughout history with migraine -- Alexander Pope, Nietzsche, Freud, Virginia Woolf, even Elvis -- and researched the treatments and medical advice available for migraine sufferers. He candidly describes his rehabilitation with the aid of prescription drugs and his eventual reemergence into the world, back to work and writing. An enthralling blend of memoir and provocative analysis, A Brain Wider Than the Sky offers rich insights into an illness whose effects are too often discounted and whose sufferers are too often overlooked.

Migraine Treatment Diary - A Powerful Tool For Migraine Headache Relief

If you suffer from migraine headaches, you are probably searching for information that can lead to migraine relief. Guess what? You have the best information available that can put you on your way to migraine headache relief, you just have to write it down. Once the diagnosis is made, a migraine treatment diary is a crucial tool that you and your health care provider can use to discover the information that may eventually head off, shorten, or lessen the pain of migraine headaches.

One of the key advantages to keeping a migraine treatment diary is that over time you will be able to identify patterns to your migraine headaches. For most people there is no cure for their migraines, but one goal is to identify those things that trigger, or start the chain reaction that becomes your migraine, to avoid them in the future. Another important discovery a headache diary can reveal are the symptoms you experience just prior to your migraine. In one clinical study, migraine sufferers who tracked their experiences in diaries learned to predict the warning symptoms of attacks over 70% of the time! Recognition of the symptoms preceding your migraine headache is critical to stop the process and avoid the migraine altogether.

Keep your migraine diary simple. Start with recording the date of the migraine headache, how long it lasted, location of the pain, the pain intensity on a scale of 1-10, the symptoms preceding the migraine, triggers, symptoms associated with migraine (nausea, vomiting, light sensitivity), treating medication, supplements or herbal remedies (name and dosage), and the pain relief from the medication (complete, moderate, none). If an alternative treatment therapy such as massage or aroma therapy helps you achieve migraine headache relief, note this as well. This particular format is helpful when you and your doctor are evaluating a new drug for your migraine headache treatment.

Many people also use a migraine treatment diary to discover their triggers. Triggers can come from a number of factors such as stress, changes in sleep patterns, weather/barometric changes, hormonal fluctuations in women (menstruation, pregnancy or menopause), strong odors (perfume, cigarette smoke, paint), medications, or certain foods. Common food triggers are alcohol, chocolate, caffeine, yeast, dairy products like yogurt and aged cheese, processed meats, and foods containing monosodium glutamate (MSG). Asian foods and processed sauces and seasonings are the biggest sources of monosodium glutamate. In order to discover your migraine triggers, record a word or two about your stress level, how much you slept, hormonal influences (for women), weather conditions, and what you ate, or if you didn't eat on the day before your migraine.

After keeping your migraine treatment diary for few cycles, patterns will begin to emerge. Some people notice that they have symptoms that begin just prior to their migraine. Common symptoms that precede migraine headaches are difficulty concentrating, fatigue, yawning, stiff neck, irritability, depression, blurred vision, color or light flashes in your vision, numbness/tingling in your face, feet or hands, coldness, dizziness, ringing in your ears, or increased urination. Once you can identify that a migraine is on its way, you can take preventive measures to stop or at least lessen the severity of the pain of your migraine.

A migraine treatment diary can be a powerful tool. It provides you and your physician with important information about the severity and frequency of your migraines. It clarifies whether the treatments prescribed are giving you pain relief. Most of all, it illuminates the situations that trigger your migraine headaches, giving you the best chance to stop your migraine before it starts.

How acupressure works:
Acupressure and acupuncture share the same active points (also called trigger points). The ancient Chinese developed system of active points stimulation over 5,000 years ago. The active points are located on imaginary lines called meridians. Accordingly, the points are referred to by the meridian they are located on and consecutive number of point on that meridian.
The ancient Chinese believed that life energy chi (pronounced chee) flows through these meridians. In a healthy person the energy flow trough meridians is unobstructed. The blockade of chi flow results in an illness. The Chinese believed that active points stimulation clears the meridians and improves the flow of energy.
The western medical science only begins to understand the mechanisms responsible for positive effects of active points stimulation. Stimulation of active points is thought to lead to increased release of endorphins. Endorphin is a natural body painkiller. Endorphin and morphine are chemically different molecules but, by coincidence, they have very similar 3-dimensional shape. This similarity in shape allows morphine to bind the endorphin receptor, reduce pain, and induce feeling of happiness. Thus endorphin released by acupressure stimulation may lead to relaxation and normalization of body functions.

Migraines - What Society Doesn't Want You to Know

Introduction to the Migraine

A migraine is often confused with a normal headache by the people, who do not know anything about it. But in actuality it is a neurological disease. A slight dose of drugs is enough to cure a headache but it is not the case with Migraine. A person having Migraine needs extraordinary care and a special treatment.

Symptoms of Migraine

A person cannot perform his / her usual routine activities for a particular period, if he is suffering from this disorder. The people suffering from Migraine usually experience severe headache and abdominal pain. They most often have complaint of dizziness and weakness in their body. Sometimes they also suffer from diarrhea, nausea, high temperature and vomiting. They have increased sensitivity to smell, sound and light. They may also have blurred vision. A Migraine attack can last from some hours to one week time

Phases of Migraine

Generally, Migraine has four phases, which are called prodrome, aura, pain and postdrome phase. In prodrome phase, early symptoms of Migraine like weakness, fever, headache, etc can be seen in the patient suffering. In this phase, the growth of Migraine is noticeable. In Aura phase, main symptoms of migraine are visible. In the pain phase of Migraine, the patient suffers from extreme headache or the real migraine headache. And the postdrom phase is the last phase of the Migraine headache.

Causes of Migraines

There are number of reasons that cause Migraine. High stress and sudden rest, disturbs our Central Nervous System which usually results in attack of headaches while resting. Long sleeps should be avoided in order to avoid these kinds of headache attacks. Migraine is also caused due to hormonal fluctuations. Hormonal fluctuations can occur because of stress or over excitement. When a person undergoes excitement, adrenaline is secreted in high levels which cause stress and hence, headache attack is triggered. Irregular sleep patterns also lead to Migraine. A long weekend sleep or a long sleep after a tiring day can be delightful while sleeping but afterwards the attack may be triggered. Exposure to smoke is a major cause of Migraine. Researches show that more than fifty percent of the Migraine patients became migraine free by just giving up smoking. Some eating habits, which doesn't suit you body, can lead to Migraine symptoms and eventually cause Migraine.

Migraine Management

Migraine can be cured by following specific diets which helps in reducing the migraine attacks. Intake of salt, alcohol, chocolate, red wine, caffeine, nut products and processed meat should be reduced. Development of Migraine can be decreased by reducing the stress from you daily life. One should modify his lifestyle to a tension free and pressure free lifestyle to wipe out stress from his life. Introducing yoga and mental exercised will greatly help you to reduce the stress levels.

Migraines Without Headaches, the Silent Migraines

Migraines are often though as always accompanied by head splitting pain. But there are migraines without headaches, also called as silent migraines. This is a common migraine type although it is not very popular. It is often triggered by stress, lack of sleep, alcohol, among plenty of others. It is also known as the migraine aura but without headache.

Interestingly, silent migraine usually takes place later in life. Men are also more prone to experience it than women. Migraine aura pertains to other symptoms that go along with migraine, usually referring to visual problems due to migraines. These include seeing zig zag lines, flashing lights, dizziness and vertigo. There are actually a lot of possible symptoms that can hit a person such as slurred speech, numbness, acute pain in different parts of the body like in the face or on the skin. Normally, these are more acute than in other types of migraine.

Since silent migraine is not accompanied by headaches, it can be very hard to diagnose. Often times, it is misdiagnosed. This is aggravated by the misconception that migraines only occur with headaches. There are times that instead of silent headache, hypoglycemia, inner ear disorders fibromyalgia and other conditions are diagnosed instead of silent migraine. However, the problem with migraines without headaches is that to be able to actually diagnose it, other conditions and disorders have to be ruled out. Symptoms are also not that particularly helpful. For example, having something wrong with the vision can also be because of some eye conditions. But the important thing is that the possibility of a condition being a silent migraine should always be kept.

But there are things that can be done to be able to diagnose migraine without headache correctly. One is to have a through and accurate family history medical records for a doctor to refer to. It has to be remembered that migraine is a disease that can be passed on from one member of a family to the next one. Cases of migraines in relatives and other similar looking cases can lead to diagnosis of silent migraine. Without an accurate and thorough family history, a doctor may not suspect that silent migraine may possibly be the culprit. Another thing to do is to observe the symptoms and other things related to the condition. It is best if to be able to describe the situation and symptoms to the doctor. Even the seemingly mundane and small things like irritability and euphoria, yawning, stiff neck can be things that should be included in the session with a specialist such as a doctor. It is best to write these things down in a daily diary of sorts.

Silent migraine, despite the absence of the headache, is a migraine. Its treatment procedures are just like the ones for other forms of migraines. These procedures can include medication such as aspirin or the common over the counter medicines such as Advil or Tylenol. These medications are fast acting and provide immediate relief. These medications can also be consulted with doctors and hopefully lessen the effects of silent migraine.

Migraines: Exploding 5.2 Migraine Myths

After living with complicated migraines with auras for all of my adult life, I've learned there are at least 5.2 dangerous migraine myths that can cost you dearly. Learning the truth behind these myths could save your life.

1. Everyone Knows that Migraines Are One Sided Headaches

This myth can delay your diagnosis by, oh, 20 or 30 years! Migraines can also include pain on both sides of the head, speech disturbances, blurred vision, pins and needles feelings or other odd sensation especially in the hands and lips; mood swings, crying jags, irritability, or sudden, overwhelming depression; stomach, neck or shoulder pain (instead of head pain); even yawning spells or weird smells (for me it was pencil shavings). In fact, a "migraine headache" might not include much if any head pain at all. It depends on what area of the brain has the blood flow disturbance.

2. Migraines Only Last a Couple of Hours

We wish! While a migraine itself may last only a few hours, the pain might last three days, and when you factor in the weird prodromal warning symptoms, the migraine auras, and the flat, post migraine recovery phase, a particularly nasty migraine can last as long as a typical hurricane.

3. No Biggie--Everybody Gets Migraines Sometimes

I heard an interview once with Hollywood actors and Nashville singers bragging about how they had performed for so many thousands of people while suffering a "nasty" migraine. Excuse me? Let's more accurately define "nasty" as it applies to real migraines: sounds hurt so much it feel like a pickaxe through the side of your skull; lights burn your eyes like dripping molten iron, and your head or neck feels like it's being crushed in a vice by trolls. Now, you tell me if you believe someone with a nasty migraine could get up under those hot stage lights and perform live for 20,000 screaming fans? Almost everyone gets headaches, not everyone gets migraines!

4. With Today's Drugs, No One Ever Needs to Have a Migraine

Pure fantasy! Sure there are natural preventives like coenzyme Q10, feverfew and magnesium that might help reduce migraines. There are also over the counter pain killers and prescription narcotics that may help. Fortunately, there are anti-emetics, triptans, ergots and serotonin receptor agonist drugs that can help stop a migraine. Recently, drug companies have introduced or rediscovered preventive drugs like beta blockers, antidepressants, anticonvulsants that can reduce the frequency or the chance-of-getting a migraine. Depending on the person, any of these treatments MIGHT work, but these treatments don't always work, and for some people, they don't work at all.

5. No One Ever Died From a Migraine Headache

Maybe not, but real people with real families have really killed themselves to stop their pain. Most doctors mean well, but sadly, because physician education about migraines is so shoddy, it can take years, or a lifetime, to get an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment. Way too many people have been turned away from emergency rooms and doctor's offices as attention seekers, drug seekers, drunks, malingerers or just plain crazy people when the real problem was a migraine. Lives ruined and lives lost are predictable costs of poor migraine diagnosis and care. The dollar cost of migraines in the United States has been estimated at $1-billion per year for medical costs, plus $15-billion in lost productivity. All in all, migraine is a costly business.

5.1 Migraines are Hard to Diagnose

Yeah, they are, but they don't need to be. A proper understanding of the range of migraine symptoms will speed diagnosis; and a proper diagnosis is by far the most important step toward proper treatment. When you finally and accurately understand the problem, you are automatically on your way toward the correct solution! Discuss your symptoms with your doctor. If necessary, gently insist that he refer you to a neurologist or specialized headache clinic. A knowledgeable professional will understand there is more to migraine than a one sided headache.

5.2 Complicated Migraines are Impossible to Treat

While it is true that the tendency toward migraines is a chronic condition, it is also true that with proper a diagnosis and the right combination of treatments and lifestyle changes, there is an excellent chance most migraine sufferers can learn to tame the beast!

Atlas of Migraine and Other Headaches

All physicians need to learn to diagnose and manage head pain. However, there are many causes of headache: some are secondary to other conditions; others are disorders in themselves. These factors often make differential diagnosis and treatment a challenge. This didactic atlas approaches the problem of migraine and other headaches from a visual perspective. The contents cover the history of migraine and headache, their epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment. While the central emphasis is on migraine, all types of headache are addressed. The book includes some classic illustrations from historical texts as well as modern images that illustrate the disorders and current thinking.

Paralysis and Hemiplegic Migraine

Those who think of migraine as "just a bad headache" may be surprised to hear about hemiplegic migraine, a type of migraine that can involve weakness or even paralysis on one side of the body. But those familiar with migraine know that it's much more than a headache. In fact, it's often not a headache at all! Migraine attacks involve a number of symptoms. Headache is a common one, but there can also be nausea, skin sensitivity, a sensitivity to light or sound, confusion or weakness.

Hemiplegic migraine is a specific type of migraine. Usually, it's divided into two types - sporadic hemiplegic migraine and familial hemiplegic migraine. Both types are similar, the difference being that those with familial hemiplegic have a close relative that gets migraine with aura - particularly the symptom of weakness.

If you've got hemiplegic migraine, either familial or sporadic, you may experience:

* Sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the body (temporary)

* Numbness, a pins-and-needles prickling sensation

* Difficulty speaking

* Headache

Headache and hemiplegic migraine may go together. This is considered to be one of the most severe forms of migraine, with reason. The sufferer can be incapacitate by an attack. This is good reason to see a doctor, and if diagnosed to make sure that you carry with you some sort of medical identification at all times.

There are other challenges when it comes to hemiplegic migraine. First, the number of severe symptoms that need to be treated all at once, including weakness or paralysis. Second, the connections with stroke mean that the most common migraine-targeting medications (triptans and egotamines) are not recommended.

There is good news! For one thing, new genetic research is helping us to diagnose this type of migraine more easily. Also, there are many other migraine treatments and medications that can be used, and that have been used successfully. The important thing, however, is to seek expert help as soon as possible. If you're already aware of a migraine connection, find a headache and migraine specialist if at all possible. If you're not sure, make sure you see a doctor so that she can rule out other severe problems, such as stroke. If you seek help right away, you can avoid serious problems. There is help available, as we understand more and more about migraine, paralysis and other types of headache.

Natural Migraine Cure - The Most Effective Remedy

A natural migraine cure is a remedy used to treat migraines and severe headaches. Some of these natural cures include herbs, ointments and essential oils. Also, having a healthy routine everyday helps in naturally treating the migraine. Migraine is a condition wherein a person who suffers on it experiences total painful feeling on his head, and sometimes he has nausea (a discomfort in the upper part of the stomach), vomiting and sensitivity to light. The feeling of having a migraine is like pounding an area in the head which gives the person a total discomfort and pain. According to physiologists, migraine is not just an inflammation on the blood vessels of the head, but also a neurological disorder. This condition is more common to women in the age range of 25 to 50 than to men.

The term "migraine" came from Greek word hemikrania, which means "half of the skull", but was revised, in French terminology as migraine. When migraine attacks, it only often hurts either the left or right side of the head of the sufferer. But the intense pain is being felt on the whole head. Migraines are caused by the enlargement of the blood vessels in the head and the chemicals that are being released by nerve fibers that loop around the blood vessels. Also, migraine occurs when a person's sympathetic nervous system is affected by nausea, diarrhea or vomiting. When having a migraine, it is best to not set aside the awful condition. There are always remedies that you can use to treat migraine, such as natural migraine cure and generic medicines. You can also consult your doctor or physician for check-up and proper treatment.

Only the person who suffers from migraine knows the unbearable pain caused by it. And the excruciating pain being felt makes the sufferer to be helpless at all. But if you are the type of person who frequently suffers from migraine, take a note of some of these natural migraine cure that will help you in treating your migraine:

(1) Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) - it is an herb that has been a popular natural remedy for centuries, and was first used in the 1980's as an alternative medicine for migraine. The extracts of Feverfew significantly lessens the pain caused by migraine;
(2) Magnesium-rich foods - eating green, leafy vegetables, nuts, beans, seeds and whole grains is a good way of having a rich magnesium nutrition for the body. This mineral helps regulate blood circulation and blood sugar levels, and implements normal heart, nerve and muscle functions;
(3) Biofeedback - it is a training that promotes control and consciousness of the body's vital functions that are insensible, such as blood pressure, blood sugar level, heart rate and breathing; and
(4) Chiropractic - it is an alternative medical treatment to cure neuromusculoskeletal disorders such as migraines and pains in neck, back and joints. But if you are not familiar with this natural migraine cures, better consult a doctor.

Either these are natural cures or drug intakes, the use of remedies for treating migraines are very important for people who frequently suffer from this painful disorder. But it is believe that the natural remedies are the best for the treatment. There are many natural migraine cure out there that are safe, inexpensive and more effective than drugs, and these treatments are not being done only by taking herbs and minerals, but also having a healthy diet, exercise and stress-free everyday routine.

Non-Prescription Migraine Treatments

A lot of people get migraines, but not everyone wants to use prescription medication for their migraines, and they are looking for migraine remedies that don't need a prescription. Here are some of the more popular migraine treatments that don't require you to get a prescription from a doctor.

The first kind of migraine medication that you can get without a prescription is non steroid anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as aspirin or ibuprofen, and medicine that contains things like acetaminophen, like Excedrin. However, when someone is using these kinds of medications for migraines they need to follow the recommendations for dosages and don't use them too long or too often. If a person's tolerance to the medicine increases, they should talk to their doctor about the migraines.

Another of the migraine treatments that can be used without the need for a prescription is Riboflavin, which is also known as B2. Those who have used it for migraine pain relief have found it to be very effective when they take 400 milligrams per day. It can be found in yogurt, eggs, legumes, almonds, yeast, cottage cheese, cheese, fish, and leafy greens. If someone wants to use it to help with their migraine pain relief, however, it's a good idea to take it in the form of a pill as well as eating the items that are listed above.

A third good form of natural migraine pain relief is going into a room that is quiet and dark. Due to the fact that most migraines come with light and noise sensitivity, one of the best migraine remedies is simply to go and lay down and close your eyes where it's quiet and dark. Even though this isn't going to go to the root of the migraine, it's going to help with relieving your pain and making you feel better.

A fourth good form of pain relief for migraines is acupuncture. It's a long standing technique of putting very fine needles into different pressure points on a person's body to help with the restoration of well being and health.

A final option for migraine pain relief is relaxation techniques, like pilates, stretching, meditation, yoga, and massages. People who have tried these techniques have found that they are having fewer migraines. Since stress is sometimes the culprit as to why someone has a migraine, this really makes sense.

As you can see, migraine medications are not the only answers when it comes to getting migraine pain relief. Even though medication is something that helps a lot of people, there are a lot of other choices in migraine remedies. For people who do not want to take medication to help their migraines but they want to do something to get some relief, they can use Riboflavin, a place that is quiet and dark, relaxation techniques, and acupuncture. They offer the relief that migraine sufferers are looking for without having to take the pills that they don't want to use. Migraine sufferers are glad to know that pills are not the only way to migraine pain relief.

Fortunately, due to medical advances migraine sufferers don't have to live with chronic migraine pain. There are many prescription and non-prescription migraine treatments available that can provide migraine pain relief. Do your research and find a doctor with experience treating migraines. This will increase your chances of establishing a long term and effective treatment plan.

Prophylaxis Migraine - Prevention For Migraines

Migraine prophylaxis refers to the treatment of patients to prevent a migraine headache in the future. It is simply known as migration prevention. Migraine prophylaxis is the common treatment that patients with recurring headaches often take part in, especially if the migraines are disabling and interfere with everyday life. Most prophylactic treatment for patients with recurring headaches usually includes intake of medicine on a daily basis. In some cases, other preventive measures are done; there are also other components in prophylactic migraine treatments.

Prophylaxis treatment in patients depends primarily in headache frequency, the severity of the migraine-related headache, the length of the individual headache due to migraine, and the way the person responds to different headache therapies. There are migraine headaches that occur frequently and there are those that can bring acute pain. One of these is rebound headache, a daily headache which occurs because of pain overuse. These headaches are due to medications and are much more difficult to treat than migraine headaches that appear sporadically and spontaneously. In some cases, extreme acute headaches can occur about once or twice a month. These kinds of migraine headaches are considered as enough reason for a person to engage in prophylactic treatment. The patient suffering from migraine and his/her physician have to decide whether it is beneficial for the patient to be on the offensive and prevent migraine-related headaches or simply treat the migraine whenever it occurs.

When doctors advise prophylactic treatment, they look for some sort of indicators. These indicators include some migraine headaches characteristics such as an average of two to eight severe headaches a month, headaches less frequent but are long-drawn-out, usually enduring for a few days, severe attacks that can disrupt daily life, predictable migraines, etc. When a patient's migraine headache qualifies in one of these indicators, the doctor is likely to consider prophylaxis treatment.

One important step is to choose which medication will suit the migraine prevention program intended. There are many choices available and many medications are proven to be effective. However, doctors will not be able to immediately know whether a certain medication is perfect for a patient. To know the correct medication, however, one must have to do a sort of trial and error procedure. The selection process for the correct medication initially begins with doctor asking his/her patient to take in a highly effective migraine prevention medication. Should the supposedly effective migraine not work, the patient moves to other medications, normally the less proven or less robust agents. Less proven medications do not necessarily mean that they are not effective; it usually means that it is not effective with as any people as other medications are. When these medications are either not successful or have side effects that patients want to avoid completely, some other medications are tried. This continues until the right fit of the medication and patient occurs. Most doctors call this procedure as an intelligent trial and error for medications.

Prophylaxis for migraines can be very effective in preventing migraine. But it has to be noted that if any medication is taken excessively during a week, it can cause rebound headaches. But with the help of consultation with the doctor alongside the intelligent trial and error procedure for medications, prophylaxis for migraines can be a helpful tool for any person suffering migraines.

Stomach Migraines, Because Migraines Aren't Just in the Head

There are times when people have all the accompanying symptoms of migraine headaches. However, they do not experience the headaches per se. What they feel is an acute pain in their abdominal region. These migraines are called stomach migraines. Stomach migraine is considered as a form of disease. The results of these migraines include recurrent vomiting and abdominal pain, often so intense that interfere with everyday life.

Because stomach migraine does not have the usual headache that accompanies migraine, it can be very hard to tell when a person has stomach migraine. And although it is recognized as a serious type of migraine, there is little information about stomach migraines. Bulk of the available information pertains to the symptoms of stomach migraine like sensitivity to light, irritability, diarrhea, loss of appetite, etc. It is more common in children but adults can still have this condition. These migraines are characterized by periodic bouts of abdominal pain that lasts for hours accompanied by paleness, vomiting and possibly fever. But little is written about the migraine itself

In children, it is very hard to diagnose cases of stomach migraines primarily because children can have a hard time communicating what they are feeling. They may also not be as keen in observing symptoms as adults. Also, when children undergo tests, often, the results do not show much information. This makes this condition very hard to diagnose. Also, it can be confused with other medical conditions such as appendicitis.

The likelihood that a child with abdominal migraine will still have migraines as an adult is high. But as the child becomes an adult, the symptoms of migraines will most likely change to something more typical such as that of head migraines. Because of this, it is necessary that the disease is understood early on so as to minimize its effect on a child. Migraines, in some cases, can have permanent consequences. It is best to treat a child very early in the migraine's progression. It also decreases the probability of the child becoming an adult with migraines.

When a patient is diagnosed with stomach migraines most doctors and specialists prescribe VPA or valproic acid to relieve suffering from those migraines. Some of them occur periodically. But for most of the stomach migraine cases that are infrequent, preventive or prophylaxis treatment is used. One example is Propranolol. It is a drug class known as beta-blockers. This medicine has proven to be effective in treating migraines in children. Medications for migraines in the head are used to treat migraines in the stomach. These medications include anti nausea medications, triptans, etc. Other treatments include non-drug migraine treatments that have been helpful in both children and adults, such as relaxation techniques. Other medications include cyproheptadine and Midrin. These medications are known to affect the levels of serotonin, a chemical in the brain. It also contains a mild sedative and acetaminophen.

Tips For Achieving a Migraine Cure

When you are searching for a way to abolish your migraine ailment forever you have a couple of possibilities. You're able to make use of pain pills to try and eliminate your migraine headache symptoms or you can use a natural strategy. Nevertheless, you must understand that no drug exists that can provide a migraine cure. To accomplish full elimination of your symptoms it'll compel you to locate an effective natural solution. Pain medications do one thing and one thing only. Their aim is to lessen discomfort on a short-term basis, but they cannot prevent the next migraine.

As many individuals have unhappily found out, getting rid of migraine symptoms for good is without question a terribly challenging task. If the intention is to offer short-term relief caused by an acute migraine headache, the objective will be no different than if analgesics were used. However, the rewards of obtaining relief through natural means as opposed to pain killers are twofold. Natural approaches are usually less dangerous and less expensive.

If the aim is to achieve a migraine cure by way of natural options, an individual isn't hunting for short-term pain relief, but longer-term prevention of migraine attacks. This is something that pain relieving medications will not be manufactured to accomplish. If you expect to discover a long-lasting migraine cure you'll be compelled to have a look at the natural remedies that are at your disposal today.

Migraine headache pain is brought on once the intracranial blood vessels dilate. A common strategy for reducing the size of the blood vessels is by lessening the flow of blood to the head. This may be accomplished by placing a cold pack on the neck at the base of the skull, hopping into a hot tub, or both. Anything that directs blood away from the head and toward the body can lessen the amount of blood flowing to the head and provide fast pain relief. However, it's for temporary relief from symptoms only. If you would like to find lasting relief you'll be required to try other natural treatment techniques that go after the root cause of the disorder.

If reducing your migraine symptoms is valuable to you, there are actually several issues concerning the condition that you are obliged to know about. Creating the perfect migraine remedy requires that you first are aware of several migraine headache details.

    Tried and Tested Migraines Treatment

Migraines treatment may vary from person to person. It is highly recommended that the migraine sufferer finds which of the available treatment suit them best. Although migraines generally go down as a person ages, help is still very much needed especially when migraine episodes can last for as long as three consecutive days and may greatly weaken the person.

There are four generic approaches for migraines treatment. The first one is trigger prevention. Some of the known migraine triggers are physical and emotional stress. Some foods like chocolates, processed foods like hot dogs and fast food products such as those that contain MSG may also set off migraines. Alcohols and caffeine are also considered as migraine culprits. Medicines may be taken to minimize the effects of these triggers such as antihistamines and beta-blockers. Breathing exercises and relaxation techniques are also helpful against stress.

The second approach for migraines treatment is pain management. This is also called abortive method. Some may opt to use non-traditional or holistic methods such as acupuncture to manage or remove pain while some may choose to take pills such as aspirins and acetaminophen. This approach is usually used when trigger-prevention method fails. It is important to know that preventive medicines should not be used at the same time with abortive medicines and vice versa. Abortive medicines will not prevent migraines from taking place.

Symptoms prevention is the third method for migraines treatment. Related migraine symptoms include nausea or vomiting and blurriness. The person may inhale eucalypti-related odors or menthol-smelling devices to calm the stomach. Blurriness may not be removed by eye drops but may be reduced in interval thru application of either hot or cold eye patches. Sufficient magnesium intake will also decrease the likelihood of migraines. Magnesium is a mineral that helps blood arteries from dilating and thus prevents the likelihood of blood upsurge into the brain.

The fourth method for migraines treatment is called general migraine management. This involves acute treatment when all of the above approaches failed. Daily medications may be necessary to reduce the occurrence and intensity of migraines.

These migraine treatments may be well used as self-induced efforts to lessen migraines. However, doctor's help is still necessary to ensure that the person is on the right track and does not make the body resistant to lower dosages of self-medication. When the body has become resistant to medicines due to regular intakes, the person may need to take higher dosages and may risk other complications.

The person should also be aware of other health conditions such as kidney and liver problems. Some migraine treatment approaches may need to be customized so as not to induce added concerns brought by other existing illnesses.

It is also helpful to write down which migraine treatment is resorted to in managing migraines. Include also information such as date and time of migraine events. Data gathering will enable the person to validate if the treatment is effective or not. Jumping from one method to another without basis and sufficient information would create an impression of ineffectiveness and the treatment methods may lose credibility.

    Truth About Migraines in Children

Migraines in children are a fact. While many of the adults dismiss the headaches experienced by children as simple pains, they may have been already suffering from this common sickness.

Migraines are typically classified depending on the symptoms a child exhibits. Tension headaches are the most common symptom, accompanied by nausea, blurriness and sensitivity to light. The child may also feel some dizziness. The other type of migraines in children is abdominal or stomach migraine. This type of migraine in children is exhibited through periodic vomiting wherein the child may or may not have headaches at all. Be aware however, that most migraines symptoms also occur in other sickness which can be determined through proper diagnosis.

Migraines in children and adolescents occur in ages between 5 and 15 years, while some even younger. Both boys and girls have the equal possibility of having migraine episodes, until after puberty. Girls during the initial menstrual periods are experiencing increasing hormonal changes. This leads the way to an increase of risk in migraine episodes. Researchers have shown that women generally suffer more migraine episodes than men during the ages of 20 to 30 while both genders experience a decline in frequency of attack after the age of 50.

Some studies suggest that migraines are hereditary. If parents have migraines episodes in their early life, it is very likely that their child may suffer the same fate. However, migraines in children may be different from their parents in terms of symptoms and specific medications. Nonetheless, the origin of migraines is still unknown and continues to elude scientists and medical specialists.

Like typical migraines in adults, migraines in children are also caused by trigger factors such as stress. Other factors considered are personality disorders, eating habits and exposure to adult vices like smoking. Parents should be aware of these triggers to minimize the frequency of migraine episodes. It is also recommended that parents should observe and be critical on these migraine factors so that their youngsters can breeze to childhood without added burden.

Some parents blame the heavy school workload that their child is handling for migraine headaches. Numerous assignments, projects and examinations on top of regular routine school work they say, contribute significantly to the migraines in children. However, parents should also be aware that proper supervision, accepting responsibility and effective time management are the keys for their children to manage well in school and prepare into adulthood.

Migraines in children should be treated with care. Most of the available pain relievers and migraine remedies used by adults are not approved for children use. Over-the-counter nonprescription drugs may have side effects to children, even in small dosages. It is advisable to seek medical attention to properly analyze the symptoms that the child feels. Sometimes, children may outgrow their migraines while some may be cured through therapy and proper medication. Typical home remedies such as cold or hot compress may be applied to children, without the danger of adverse risks. Migraines in children and adolescents are something that can be managed, with proper information and guidance.
