Do you like this story?
The first important thing to understand about migraines is that they are different for all sufferers. Although you will meet many people who suffer with migraines they will all feel it in slightly different ways.
There are three main ways to treat symptoms of migraine headaches; pain relief, relaxation techniques and finally through defining and avoiding your migraine triggers.
Below are a brief description of each method to help you decide how best to proceed in the management of your migraine symptoms.
1. Pain relief. Many migraine sufferers complain that most migraine medication does not work. You are unlikely to find a pain relief which will alleviate the pain and all the associated pains of a migraine. This does not render these medications useless, it just means that you should expect of them only what they are capable of delivering. It is worth discussing the medication available with your doctor. You may also like to visit some of the online forums as these will contain more reviews of the available pain relief.
2. Relaxation. A migraine puts a huge stress on the whole body and this will usually cause more discomfort to the migraine sufferer. If you can find a good method of relaxation you may be able to overcome your migraine quicker. Research has suggested that stress is one of the most common triggers for migraines, so allow yourself time everyday to relax.
3. Avoid your migraine triggers. Researchers are gradually learning more and more about migraines, but there are many aspects which are so individual that only you will be able to define them. If you can work out what triggers your migraines you may be able to avoid or at least minimize your interaction with these triggers.
In the long term it is best way to handle the symptoms of migraine headaches is to understand them as fully as possible.
Try to keep a migraine diary. Every time you suffer a migraine record the following details; what time of day was it, where were you, what were your surroundings like (noisy, busy, flashing lights), what had you drunk or eaten that day, finally record the symptoms and the order in which they appeared.
Over time you should start to see a pattern. Once you have identified the main culprits for triggering your migraine you can try to avoid them. As some situations are beyond your control it is worth having a range of relaxation techniques and pain relief for the occasions when you are unable to prevent the symptoms of migraine headaches from striking.
